The Yellow Jessamine (Gelsemium Sempervirens) became the official state flower of South Carolina in 1924. It was selected not only for its beauty and sweet fragrance, but also because it is found throughout the state. According to the South Carolina legislature, "its delicate flower suggests the pureness of gold; its perpetual return out of the dead winter suggests the lesson of constancy in, loyalty to, and patriotism in the service of the State."
 
The Yellow Jessamine is a hardy, evergreen flowering vine native to the southeastern United States (and is sometimes referred to as "Carolina Jasmine"). While it is beautiful, all parts of the plant are poisonous.
